Rhinitis
(Inflammation of the Nose: stuffy, runny nose)
Treatment
Non-Sedating Antihistamines:
- Aerius (desloratidine)
- Allegra (fexofenodine)
- Claritin (Loratidine)
- Reactine (Cetirizine)
Nasal Steroids
- Topical (on inside surface of nose only) therefore are safe
- Works slowly gradually over time therefore needs to be taken REGULARLY (every day)
- Should point nose spray towards outside of nose to help prevent nosebleeds (cross hands – spray left nostril with right hand, right nostril with left hand)
- Nasal moisturizers (i.e. Nasogel, Rhinaris or Secaris) also help prevent nosebleeds
- Important to note: Prior to taking your first dose of a new bottle, you will need to prime it.
- Shake the bottle before each dose
- When using Avamys (light blue lid): use fingers instead of thumb to push lever on the side of the bottle (using your thumb may break the lever)
Saline Washes (Salt water)
- Washes/Rinses away secretions to clean nose out
- Usually use 2x/day, but can use as little or as often as you like
- Do not use right after using medicated spray (will wash out medication)
- Use Saline (ie Salinex or Hydrasense) OR make it yourself (1L water + 1tbs salt + 1tbs baking soda; boil & cool)
- Use Saline wash first
- Apply nasal moisturizer second
- Use nasal steroid last
